Melexis Introduces New Automotive Grade Fan Driver IC for Small Form Factor Applications

Melexis today announced the release of its new automotive-grade fan driver ICs, US168KLD and US169KLD, for automotive and other applications that require high reliability and ultra-small form factor solutions.

The US168KLD and US169KLD are automotive-grade single-chip solutions for driving single-coil brushless DC fan motors. Because of the soft switching technology, these solutions ensure EMI and acoustic noise are kept low, making them ideal for in-vehicle applications such as sensor fans and other applications such as cooling fans for wireless chargers, computing, audio and multimedia devices.

Both devices are full bridge drivers that drive motors up to 300 mA and supply voltages from 1.8V to 5V. They are also integrated with highly sensitive Hall-effect sensors. With built-in reverse voltage protection, rotor lockup and thermal protection, the drive is stable and reliable even in demanding applications.

Both devices are housed in a tiny UTDFN6 package and are only 0.4 mm high and occupy only 3 mm2 of PCB area, making them ideal for integration into ultrathin fans. Among them, the US168 tachometer (FG) output signal, while the US169 uses the alarm (RD) output signal. Both fan drives are AEC-Q100 qualified, so they operate reliably even in the most demanding applications.

Commenting on the newly released product, Dirk Leman, product line manager for fan drives, said: "Cooling has always been a boon to innovation, helping to break through the limits of the CPU's computing power and overheating the power supply. With the increasing number of integrated electronics and growing demand for automotive fans, Melexis' new drives ensure that fans run quietly and reliably in line with consumer expectations for in-car applications. These fully-integrated automotive-grade devices There is no need to use any external components, which allows customers to now also use soft-switching technology for very small fan applications.
